King 528 K9s was founded to honor the legacy of Chandler Police Officer Chris Farrar, who dedicated his life to protecting and serving others. Chris was a K9 handler with the department and King 528 was his call sign.
Our mission is to provide service dogs in Chris's memory to support first responders, military veterans, individuals with disabilities, and organizations that serve the community. Each dog placed represents a living tribute to Chris's unwavering commitment to helping others.
Our founder, Tom Haubold is a United States Air Force veteran and retired Police Officer who founded King 528 K9s with a mission rooted in service, resilience, and remembrance.
After sustaining a traumatic brain injury in the line of duty, Tom faced ongoing medical challenges. Though he received various treatments, becoming the recipient of a service dog proved to be a truly live changing experience.
Motivated by the impact his service dog Haley had on his life, Tom created King 528 K9s to pay it forward to others in need.
Through this work he honors the memory of his close friend, Officer Chris Farrar, and carries forward Chris's legacy of service and compassion.
Haley is Tom's devoted service dog whose love and loyalty give him strength every day. Their story is a beautiful example of how King 528 K9s transforms lives, one partnership at a time.
My name is Haley, and I'm so much more than an adorable pup. I share a bond with my owner Tom that is truly unique and invaluable. Together, we've built a partnership rooted in trust, love, and purpose.
I can sense changes in Tom’s body before a migraine begins, allowing him to prepare and manage the pain before it fully sets in. I provide comfort and companionship during tough moments, help him reach a safe place when needed, and offer stability and balance as we walk side by side.
Because of our teamwork, Tom faces each day with confidence and peace of mind. Our relationship is built on mutual trust, deep understanding, and unwavering support. We are a true partnership in every sense.
When you donate to King 528 K9s you help make a partnership like ours possible. Your generosity provides a dog like me to someone in need offering comfort, strength, and hope.
I am a United States Air Force veteran and retired police officer. After sustaining a traumatic brain injury in the line of duty, I've lived with chronic migraines and balance issues that have become a permanent part of my life.
While various treatments have provided only limited relief, receiving my service dog Haley made a profound difference in my quality of life. She helps me manage my condition more effectively and empowers me to engage in daily activities.
As a father of a child with a disability, I also understand firsthand the daily challenges families face and the invaluable support a service dog can provide. These personal experiences are what drives the mission of King 528 K9s. My goal is to give others the same life changing support and independence that I've been fortunate to receive.
My son, Officer Chris Farrar, proudly served with the Chandler Police Department for eighteen years, following his earlier service as a paramedic. When the demands of the job brought stress and anxiety, Chris found comfort in long rides with his dog, Phoebe, whose companionship was a constant source of peace.
Chris was looking forward to becoming a K-9 officer, and that dream came true when he was partnered with his K-9, Benzo. Though Benzo had not yet been introduced to our family before Chris's passing, when we first met him, he instinctively became calm, gentle, and responsive - almost as if he understood that we needed comfort.
Chris had a passion for helping others, and after overcoming his own struggles, he made it a priority to support his fellow officers and community members in their battles with mental health. I am honored to be part of King 528 K9s, carrying forward my son's legacy of service, compassion, and healing.
I proudly served over 27 years in law enforcement with the Tempe (AZ) Police Department before retiring as a Police Sergeant in March of 2025. During my career I had the opportunity to supervise many critical incidents and provided support to officers, staff and members of the community as needed.
My service to the City of Tempe continues as I accepted the role of Director of Safety and Security for the Tempe Elementary School District in April 2025, overseeing the protection of thousands of students, staff and visitors across 26 school sites.
Throughout my career, I have also seen firsthand the impact that service and therapy dogs can have in bringing comfort, strength, and healing during difficult times.
Serving on the board of King 528 K9s is an honor, as it allows me to carry forward Officer Chris Farrar’s legacy while helping provide these life-changing companions to first responders, veterans, and families in need.
